LAND
ART - PAPA WESTRAY
was established in August 2007 as an artists' run, not for profit
project for exploration and regeneration of the island's landscape
and heritage through programme of events, place-specific art commissions,
artist’s residences and building of the working environment
for contemporary arts practice.
We see the Island as a place where art can be created and experienced
in the unique landscape absorbing the history and stories
Land Art - Papa Westray is inspired by the island's great traditions
of working on the land, craftsmanship and sea-raiding
At the moment the project is run, managed and funded by only two
artists based in Papa Westray.
We would like to hear from artists who would like to contribute
to professional arts practice development in Orkney as well as submit
proposals for our Touring Programmes and Papay Gyro Nights Arts
Festival

LAND ART - PAPA WESTRAY
is developing following projects:
- Place-Specific Commissions in visual art, music
and film exploring the ways of interpretation of the landscape and
heritage of the island in 21st century context
- Artist’s Residences in Papay - providing
an opportunity for artists to develop new directions in their art
practice and to reflect on the islands environment and heritage
- Exhibitions and Events in Orkney - presenting
Land Art - Papa Westray Projects
- Touring Programmes of Exhibitions / Projects
Worldwide - reaching wider audience, introducing new artists into
the project and promoting the Island, Land Art - Papa Westray Projects
and artists involved
- Papay Gyro Nights Arts Festival - reviving the
old Papay tradition and establishing a working forum for creative
discussions, collaboration and new works development
- Landscape Regeneration through introduction of
site-specific art works and
developing infrastructure for professional
art practice using sensitive restoration of traditional
buildings and experimental architecture to create Papay Artists
Working Centre which will include studios for visiting artists,
exhibitions and performances venue and house for the island’s
art collection
